Lunar New Year Workshop: Hong Kong-Style Glutinous Rice Cake and Salted Kumqua (4 Feb 2026)

In celebration of the Lunar New Year, Hong Kong Chu Hai College hosted a Lunar New Year Workshop: Hong Kong-Style Glutinous Rice Cake and Salted Kumqua on February 4, 2026. The event drew enthusiastic participation from students, who immersed themselves in the hands-on preparation of traditional festive treats, experiencing firsthand the depth and charm of local culinary heritage.

Guided by instructors, students carefully kneaded glutinous rice dough, wrapped sweet peanut fillings, and delicately rolled each piece in shredded coconut to create soft, fragrant rice balls. At another station, participants layered fresh kumquats and coarse salt in jars, learning the traditional method of preserving citrus—a practice rich with cultural meaning and seasonal wisdom.

Through this interactive workshop, students not only acquired practical skills but also connected more deeply with Hong Kong’s culinary traditions, appreciating the customs and communal spirit embedded in festive foods.
